Weight Loss Injection FAQs

Is there more information on this treatment?

Tirzepatide is currently prescribed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. From 2025 it will also be available for weight loss treatment.

Tirzepatide was approved for use on the NHS by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

It was approved for people in England over the age of 18 living with excess weight along with other health problems linked to weight.

Read more on NICE’s decision to approve this treatment for NHS use.

How does tirzepatide work for weight loss?

Tirzepatide works by supressing appetite centres in the brain that control gut hormones.

It helps you feel less hungry. It also slows the movement of food passing through the body, making you feel fuller for longer.

Clinical trials have shown tirzepatide can help people living with excess weight lose up 20 per cent of their starting body weight. Results depend on the dose and accompanying diet and lifestyle support.

Tirzepatide can only be prescribed by a healthcare professional. It must be prescribed alongside support to live a healthier life. This includes making changes to diet and increasing physical activity.

Tirzepatide comes as an injection, which can be self-administered once a week.

Will more people be eligible to receive weight loss injections in the future?

The NHS is using a phased approach to make weight loss injections available over the next 12 years.

A phased approach means that the NHS will manage the flow of patients into treatment. This is so the health system does not become overwhelmed.

This approach will ensure the treatment is delivered safely. It also means that the NHS is able to plan for an increase in service demand. This involves building specific skills and knowledge within the workforce.

It is likely that more people will be eligible for this treatment in 2026. We will make more details available over the coming months.

Will there be any further support around the injections?

Any patient prescribed tirzepatide must take part in specifically designed wraparound care.

The NICE guidance requires wraparound care. This will focus on diet, nutrition and increasing physical activity. NHS England will provide more details of the wraparound support offer later this year. Patients may npt be able to access tirzepatide if they refuse the wraparound care support.

At Frome Medical Practice, we are working with GPs and other staff to give patients the right care and support. This will help us safely prescribe new weight-loss medicines with the correct help in place for patients.

Will everyone who is eligible have access to weight loss injections?

Tirzepatide might not be suitable for everyone. Equally, not everyone who is eligible will want to use it to support their weight loss.

A healthcare professional will discuss the most appropriate treatment if you are eligible. We will always take your preferences into account.

Will there be a cost to the patient for being prescribed weight loss injections?

Normal prescription charges will apply. If you are entitled to free NHS prescriptions, you will not have to pay.

Everyone will be entitled to free wraparound support.
