What to expect from Live Well with Pain

Why take part?

Persistent pain can affect your physical health, mood, sleep, relationships and everyday activities. Live Well with Pain is based on the 10 Footsteps to Living Well with Pain. It helps you develop practical skills and strategies that can make day-to-day life easier.

Many people find that taking part helps them:

  • Better understand persistent pain
  • Feel more confident managing their symptoms
  • Learn practical self-management techniques
  • Connect with others who understand what it is like to live with pain
  • Focus on improving quality of life, despite ongoing pain

How it works

The programme runs for 6 weeks, with a 2 hour session each week.

Sessions take place in the Boardroom at Frome Medical Practice (upstairs, accessible by lift). They are led by trained members of our Health Connections Team.

Each session includes a mixture of:

  • Information and practical self-management tools
  • Group discussion and reflection
  • Videos and shared learning
  • Resources and activities to use between sessions

Groups typically include 8 to 16 people who are all living with persistent pain.

The programme is supportive and informal. You are welcome to contribute as much or as little as you feel comfortable with, and you will never be expected to share personal information.

We understand that sitting for long periods can be difficult. You are welcome to stand, stretch or move around whenever you need to.

Topics we cover

Over 6 weekly sessions, we cover all 10 Footsteps to Living Well with Pain:

  1. Pain and the brain
  2. Acceptance
  3. Pacing
  4. Setting goals and getting active
  5. Relaxation and mindfulness
  6. Sleep
  7. Communication
  8. Managing mood
  9. Medicines and nutrition
  10. Managing setbacks

Some sessions cover more than one footstep, allowing us to work through all 10 topics over the 6 week programme.

Attendance and commitment

Places on Live Well with Pain are limited and often in high demand.

The 6 sessions are designed to build on one another, so we ask participants to commit to attending all 6 sessions wherever possible.

Attending regularly helps you get the greatest benefit from the programme and ensures that places are available for people who are ready to take part.

Who is the programme for?

The programme is suitable for adults living with persistent or long-term pain who would like to learn practical skills and strategies to improve their quality of life.
