Sight loss – Somerset Council
Somerset Council provides information and links to equipment, support services, and local societies for people who are blind, partially sighted, or have dual sensory loss.
The Outside Clinic
Provides free NHS home eye and hearing tests for people who find it difficult to get out. Includes full aftercare, glasses, and hearing aids.
Accessibility and autism friendly libraries
Somerset libraries offer accessible services for people with disabilities, carers, foster carers, and educators. Support is available for people who are blind, partially sighted, or have reading difficulties.
Macular Degeneration Support Group – Frome
A friendly social group for people affected by macular degeneration or sight loss. Activities include talks, quizzes, music, gentle exercise and outings.
Meets on the third Wednesday of each month, 10 am to midday, at Frome Cricket Club.
Somerset Sight
Somerset Sight provides services, training, and leisure activities to help people with sight loss stay independent. Includes a volunteer visiting service.
Somerset Sight – Frome Social Group
Frome Activity Group meets on the last Thursday of each month, 10 am to midday at The Blue House, 1 King Street, Frome.
National Support
Talking Newspapers
Find local and national talking newspapers for people with sight loss.
Listening Books
Provides audiobooks for people who have a disability or illness that makes reading difficult.
Blue Badge Scheme
Offers parking concessions for people with severe walking difficulties, sight impairment, or hidden disabilities such as autism or mental health conditions.
Blind Veterans UK
Supports vision-impaired ex-service personnel with rehabilitation, training, emotional support, and practical advice. Help is also available for carers.
Guide Dogs
Provides guide dogs and other support to help people with sight loss live independently.
RNIB – Royal National Institute of Blind People
Offers advice and support for anyone affected by sight loss, including practical help and emotional support.
Be My Eyes
Connects blind or low vision users with volunteers and companies through live video and AI for everyday assistance.
Macular Society
Provides free information and support for people affected by macular disease, including family and carers. Offers an advice line and online resources.
