Asthma:

If you suffer with Asthma and use an inhaler you will be invited to an annual review with the Practice Nurse. These 20 minute appointments can be booked online or via telephoning our appointments line 01373 301301.

Blood Pressure Measurement/Hypertension:

If you suffer from high blood pressure/hypertension you will be invited to an annual check (6 monthly if taking tablets). These annual appointments , called “one stop” can be booked online or via telephoning our appointments line 01373 301301.

We also have automated blood pressure machines at all of our Surgeries for you to use at any time to check your own blood pressure. In addition your doctor may ask you to take some readings at home and we will be able to loan you a machine to do this. Please ask at reception for information.

Blood tests

If you need to have a blood test appointments for fasting and non-fasting tests are available on a daily basis. These can be booked online or via telephoning our appointments line 01373 301301.

Alternatively we do offer a sit and wait blood test services every day at Frome Medical Centre, Enos Way, Frome. These are not recommended for fasting blood test as the waiting time is not guaranteed. This sit and wait service runs from 8.30am to 11.00am

Results for your test are normally available within 2/3 days and can be obtained by email or telephone after 11am daily on 01373 301300

Breast Screening:

The breast screening service is operated by Avon Breast Screening who can be contacted on 0117 342 6886. They arrange for all women to be screened at the mobile breast screening unit.

Cervical Smears:

Cervical Smears are undertaken by the Practice Nurse and appointments can be booked online or via telephoning our appointments line 01373 301301. It is preferable to take the smear during the middle of your cycle. You will be recalled at 3 yearly intervals, unless you have had any previous problem.

If you have had any unexpected bleeding between periods, or any other unexpected bleeding it may be advisable to see a doctor.

Child Health Surveillance

Six week developmental checks are carried out by your doctor in surgery. Often this will be done at the same time as your post-natal check. Routine development checks are then carried out by your health visitor who will be able to provide more information on their services. To contact the health visiting team telephone 03003 230118

Contraceptive/Family Planning Advice

The nursing team at the Practice have training on all areas of contraception and can provide advice on all methods available. We recommend that you have an annual pill check, these 10 minute appointments can be booked online or via telephoning our appointments line 01373 301301.

Counselling

The Practice offers a limited counselling service to registered patients, you will need a referral from the GP. Alternatively the Practice does employ a specialist nurse qualified in helping patients with depression or low mood. If you feel you need either of these services please make an appointment to discuss your concerns with your Team GP.

Diabetes Clinic
The Practice runs a weekly clinic for patients with diabetes on Wednesday afternoons in Team 2 Area in the Frome Medical Centre, Enos Way, Frome. If you have diabetes we will invite you to come to the clinic for a full review at least once a year.

It is important you have blood and urine tests at least a week before you come so that the nurse or doctor can advise you about any adjustments you may need to your medication.

In addition you will be invited to an annual retinal screening appointment, these clinics are run by staff from the Royal United Hospital and take place in either Frome Medical Centre or at Frome Community Hospital.

Ear Syringing

If you feel that you need ear syringing, please make an appointment with the Practice Nurse. Please put eardrops or drops of almond or olive oil, into the affected ear for 3-5 days prior to your appointment. This will soften the wax and make it easier to remove.

Immunisation Clinic

All children receive appointments for their immunisations at the Health Centre. The immunisation clinics take place on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday mornings. They are run by our immunization nurse. If you have concerns about immunization please discuss these with your health visitor.

Maternity care

If you find out that you are pregnant please make an appointment with a GP, these can be booked online or via telephoning our appointments line 01373 301301. The GP will then refer you to the midwife team based at Frome Community Hospital. Alternatively you can contact the Midwife team direct on 01373 454763

Medical Examinations

If you need a private medical examination for insurance purposes or for the DVLA please contact your GP’s secretary.

Minor Surgery

If you require Minor Surgery this may be able to be carried out in the Practice and subject to certain criteria covered by the NHS. To discuss this please make an appointment with a GP, these can be booked online or via telephoning our appointments line 01373 301301

Physiotherapy is available following referral from your doctor.

Stop Smoking Service:

The Practice is keen to promote healthy living and support patients who would like to give up smoking.

We offer two different kind of supports:

  • Group meeting – No appointment is necessary and these operate at Frome Medical Centre, Enos Way on a Tuesday evening from 5.30pm to 7pm.
  • One to One support from a qualified stop smoking nurse, appointments are available to book either online or via telephoning our
    appointments line 01373 301301

Travel Advice

If you are travelling abroad it is sensible to make provision well in advance of your expected date of travel, if possible at least six weeks in advance.

The Surgery has a full stock of all vaccines, including Yellow Fever, and can give full guidance on health matters relating to travel abroad and long haul flights etc.

Our practice nurses have up-to-date information and would be delighted to discuss your individual requirements.
You may be charged for certain travel vaccines

It would be very helpful in planning your vaccination schedule if you could print off and complete this Travel Risk Assessment and post it or drop if off at the surgery as long as possible before your travel clinic appointment.

Vasectomy

If you are thinking about this please request an information leaflet and make a joint appointment for yourself and your partner with your doctor. There is a vasectomy clinic at the Frome Medical Centre and you will be referred to this service if after the consultation with the GP you decide to proceed.

Warfarin Monitoring

If you take warfarin you will need to have the dose checked on a regular basis, your nurse will confirm what this period needs to be. These checks, called INR, are pre-bookable appointments which can be booked online or via telephoning our appointments line 01373 301301.

Young Persons Clinic

The Practice operates a weekly drop-in clinic for young people who need treatment or advice about sexual health, contraception, eating disorders, drugs, counselling or general health. It is open from 4.00 p.m. every Wednesday in the Treatment Area in Frome Medical centre. It is open to all young people, not just those registered with the practice, no appointment is necessary, just drop in.
